Debate Cake - I Love Peckham:
With Ahamed Mansaray
Ahamed Mansaray (HGAED Artist) explores the effects of gentrification on the community in his work. He lead a Debate Cake, which is a relaxed conversation that uses creative methods and cake, to explore difficult issues. In this instance the debate was called 'I Love Peckham' and referenced the tote bags that can often be found in newly gentrified areas, often being purchased by new comers to the community. The debate, therefore, questions what it means to 'love' a place. How gentrification can often add a gloss to an area to make it look 'nice' for the newcomers, but is forgetful of the community that already exists there. The debate questioned when and if there is a lack of recognition for a resident community, can these changes can create racial and social tensions and if so how can we resist? The debate provided a space for peoples concerns and experiences to be raised and shared.
