Debate Cake

Overview
The reasoning behind holding a debate cake was that I felt I knew about how gender is viewed from my perspective and that of my fellow peers, but I wanted to see how other, younger students, were being taught and introduced into the ideas of gender and gender stereotypes. I was interested to see if this differed from how I was taught.
The Power Point below shows my plan for the Debate Cake.

A Debate Cake’s purpose is to create new ways of discussing serious topics that sparks new ways of thinking. It allows for less structure and for a creative flow. What I wanted to achieve from having a debate cake on “breaking gender” and exploring how stereotypes are created, is to understand if younger people have more open views on gender and I think I definitely achieved this. Seeing the ways that the year 7s (aged 11-12 years old) thought about gender and the ideas they shared, showed me a whole new perspective. To be able to enjoy a cake, whilst also discussing such a harsh issue, made for inspiring art works. I definitely felt inspired by what the students and even myself were making as we bounced ideas off each other. The debate cake is definitely a successful and creative way of sharing ideas and seeing new perspectives.
