Decolonising the line
Disrupting the colonised line
The second part of the life class drawing moved on to disrupt this sedimented idea of drawing by using more expressive techniques, for example using story telling or verbal prompts to inspire a pose from the model, or by limiting the materials used or the way they could be used to create a drawing. This process supported my intention of subverting the traditional life drawing process by disrupting the colonised line to create alternative drawings of the body.
The other important aspects of this class. The first being that the model had ownership over her body, she put herself into the positions from which we drew, this is different from the paintings that we had looked at where it was clear the artist (a man) had positioned the woman in the image. As the YWAs mentioned, the compositions in the paintings often sexualised the woman, and they felt uncomfortable looking at the paintings because the intended viewer was a heterosexual man. Below are the drawings produced by the YWAs. You can see the difference in the drawings.
