Fashion and the Male Gaze
Yen Vu
"Society, through the lens of men, has a particular ideal body type that strictly conforms to femininity"
In our practice, we are interested in looking at fashion/ We are interested in creating pieces that include the opinions of others, especially from our local community of Peckham. We are also interested in how women's fashion has been heavily influenced by the male gaze. to challenge heteronormative ways of seeing we explore other senses rather than just sight. We are curious to explore how alternative senses can influence fashion designs and how this can develop more feminist ways of thinking about clothing. In our workshop, we focused on tests, and we invited the participants to create a collaborative garment. We used bubble tea as a way to trigger thoughts around taste and also create an informal space for conversations. The conversations reflected on the quote and participants created two responses, one written response to the quote and a design based on the taste of the bubble tea, These were all brought together in a fashion garment that represented the group.
